One of our residents was depressed because his birthday was coming and he had not heard anything from his daughter who lives in Delaware. Ray did not like the change in personality for this resident, and immediately tried to have the resident decide what he wanted for his special birthday dinner. This resident began conferring with his table mates and decided that he wanted a real hamburger, with accompanying French fries. Deciding what he wanted did divert him from thinking about not being remembered on his birthday. This resident was overwhelmed about his special dinner, and shared a birthday cake with the friends at his table. This was surely nurturing the spirit of life for this gentleman. Later in the day, his daughter did call, and he was so happy to share how wonderful his birthday had been.
